Biodegradable Electrohydraulic Soft Actuators

Biodegradable materials decompose and return to nature. This functionality can be applied derive robotic systems that are environmentally friendly. study presents a fully biodegradable soft actuator, which is one of the key elements in “green” robotics. The working actuator based on an electrohydraulic principle, similar hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic actuators. developed this consists dielectric film made polylactic acid (PLA) polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), with soybean oil as liquid electrodes from mixture gelatin, glycerol, sodium chloride (NaCl). synthesized electrode material exhibits Young's modulus 0.06 MPa resistivity 258 Ω·m when mass fraction NaCl relative amount gelatin glycerol 10 wt%. softness results actuation strain values 3.2% (at 1 kV, corresponding 1.2 kV mm−1) 18.6% 9.6 for linear-type circular-type actuators, respectively. These obtained actuators comparable those nonbiodegradable same type, representing successful implementation concept.
